AquaErotica edited by Mary Anne Mohanraj
I kind of liked this collection, but I don't want anyone to know
it. I'm still pissed at Mary Anne Mohanraj, the editor of AquaErotica
, who rejected my submissions for both this and the forthcoming
Volume II. I sent the same story both times. The second year, it
survived the first cut, so I guess it improved with age!
I define erotica as literary smut-a well-written story that could
stand alone, enhanced by a sexual presentation, an erotic element
meant to arouse you. My writing may lean toward stroke fiction (stories
intended to provide fuel for masturbation), but much of this collection
goes the opposite direction: stories about fucking that try not
to turn the reader on. Okay, enough about what I didn't like.
It began with such promise: I Want is a scorcher by Mary Maxwell
about a detour in the middle of a deserted desert road. New House
by Daniel James Cabrillo is hot, and it makes you wonder. Then there's
Hydrodynamica, Diane Kepler's clever tale about a fantasy induced
by a picture of Daniel Bernoulli the narrator encounters while cramming
for an exam involving fluid dynamics. I had to stop reading that
one in the check out line before any fluids dynamically appeared
on the front of my jeans.
Then came the scuba divers left for the sharks on the Great Barrier
Reef. Watercolor by Thomas S. Roche lifted my spirits, and Movements
by Michael Hemmingson had its moments, but it also had marital difficulties.
I read erotica to escape, not to relive real life disappointments.
Hot Springs by Carol Queen lived up to its name, and Kristine Hawes'
Velvet Glove gave me a hand, but the rest of AquaErotica reminded
me of kugel-made up of good stuff, but it's just not desert, at
least not in the sense of a chocolate cake, with rich, creamy, thick
fudge frosting. Most of it left me limp. The waterproof package
is a plus, though-no embarrassing come stains if your girlfriend
finds it under you mattress!
I've probably pissed off about everyone who is anyone in erotica
(I may have to change my pen name before submitting to another anthology),
but I recommend sitting down at the bookstore to skim through this
compilation. Make sure it's what you want before you take it home.
Why buy erotica that leaves you limp?
